چکیده

Spin induced precessional modulations of gravitational wave signals from supermassive black hole binaries can improve the estimation of luminosity distance to the source by space based gravitational wave missions like the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We study how this impacts the ability of LISA to do cosmology, specifically, to measure the dark energy equation of state (EOS) parameter w. Using the CDM model of cosmology, we show that observations of precessing binaries with mass ratio 10:1 by LISA, combined with a redshift measurement, can improve the determination of w up to an order of magnitude with respect to the nonprecessing case depending on the total mass and the redshift.

Short GRB and Binary Black Hole Standard Sirens as a Probe of Dark Energy

Observations of the gravitational radiation from well-localized, inspiraling compact-object binaries can measure absolute source distances with high accuracy. When coupled with an independent determination of redshift through an electromagnetic counterpart, these standard sirens can provide an excellent probe of the expansion history of the Universe and the dark energy. Short γ-ray bursts, if p...

A three-stage search for supermassive black-hole binaries in LISA data

Gravitational waves from the inspiral and coalescence of supermassive black-hole (SMBH) binaries with masses m1 ∼ m2 ∼ 10 are likely to be one of the strongest sources for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We describe a three-stage data-analysis pipeline designed to search for and measure the parameters of SMBH binaries in LISA data. The first stage uses a time– frequency track-sea...

The Merger History of Supermassive Black Holes in Galaxies

The ubiquity of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of nearby luminous galaxies can arise from the multiple mergers experienced by dark matter halos in hierarchical structure formation models, even if only a small fraction of these galaxies harbor SMBHs at high redshifts. We illustrate this possibility using cosmological Monte Carlo simulations of the merger history of dark matter h...

Final spins from the merger of precessing binary black holes

The inspiral of binary black holes is governed by gravitational radiation reaction at binary separations r & 1000M, yet it is too computationally expensive to begin numerical-relativity simulations with initial separations r * 10M. Fortunately, binary evolution between these separations is well described by postNewtonian equations of motion. We examine how this post-Newtonian evolution affects ...

Gravitational Radiation from Coalescing Supermassive Black Hole Binaries in a Hierarchical Galaxy Formation Model

We investigate the expected gravitational wave emission from coalescing supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries resulting from mergers of their host galaxies. We employ a semi-analytic model of galaxy and quasar formation based on the hierarchical clustering scenario to estimate the amplitude of the expected stochastic gravitational wave background owing to inspiraling SMBH binaries and bursts ...
